Let me preface this by saying, that you have to read what I am saying, and think unselfishly about this or my words are going to sound like hogwash to you.
Of course a playoff on paper, sounds like an amazing idea. 8 best teams, three rd playoff, crown a true national champion. I get it, the idea sounds lovely, easy, undisputable. Who wouldn't want a true champion, instead of a computer spitting out two teams to play for the title?
Well, I am actually one of those that are against a playoff, and this is why:
1. Players don't get paid. Easily my number 1 response as to why a playoff is a terrible idea. A playoff would increase the revenues through the roof for each school in this playoff. If you made it through and won, instead of the 12-15 million BCS payout, Triple that! a school through the TV Contracts etc, would literally hit the lottery and bring upwards to 40-50 million to their school. Oh, here son, you made us 40 million, enjoy this 80 thousand dollar humanties degree... College football players aren't "slaves". An education is valuable or a launching pad to the pros, but for what price? Reggie Bush got his Heisman trophy stripped, USC got put on probation, for what? Cause the NCAA and USC made tens of millions of dollars and Bush was able to rent his family a nice home?
No other business in the United States would be allowed to operate in this fashion. I make you 30 million, you give me an 80k dollar education? uhhh thanks a lot.
2.Wear and tear on the players: This is a GIANT reason that nobody really cares about. These players are amateurs, they are kids, but yet are playing the most violent sport/game on the planet for an education. I don't want to scoff at an "education" but C'mon! This isn't water aerobics, this is car crash like hits over and over. Torn knees, broken ribs, concussions, etc etc. NCAA teams already play upwards to 14-15 games a season! That is just a couple shy from an NFL season. so you tack on potentially 3 more games, These kids are sacrificing and breaking their bodies for now 17-18 games!
Sure the NCAA could shorten the Regular Season to 10-11 games, but does anybody seriously think the NCAA or Colleges are going to give up those games and the money? Not a chance.
3. BCS gets it right, most of the time: I can only think of a few instances where a public outcry was warranted. Can anyone really say there has been a time, where someone was grossly ripped off? I can't think of any. People throw out the Boise St/TCU arguments, but let's be honest, would Alabama go undefeated playing Boise St's schedule? Would Boise St. go undefeated playing Alabama's schedule?
Feel free to answer those yourself. BCS still would have to be used to select the top 8 teams for a playoff. So what about numbers 9-12? They are gonna gripe, there will be complaining in any sport, NCAA basketball has 65 teams, people complain they were left out, you expand to 96, guess what? someone else will feel snubbed. I'm sick of this "everybody gets a trophy" mentality we live with today. If you are on the bubble, you have no right to complain.
Basically those are some reasons why I am personally against a playoff. I think we forget that this is a game played by amateurs/kids who make no money, and sacrifice their body for a lot more than what they receive in return. Sacrifices that could negatively impact their quality of life. These kid risk paralysis, death, and severe injury for our entertainment. It is time for us to stop being selfish, and to realize the big picture, and what is most important.
