Oh Dallas, how you make me want to pull an Elvis Presley and explode my TV Screen, only I'd use a bazooka while watching you.
To say Dallas have problems would be like saying Lindsay Lohan has a slight drug problem. Obvious but understated.
I have been a Cowboy fan since 1984. I have sit through some terrible seasons, Steve Pelleur anybody? Or those terrible late 90 seasons with Chad Hutchinson,Quincy Carter etc?
Even the 1-15 Cowboy season of 1989 doesn't compare to the farce that is this season. Cause at least with the 1-15 team, you knew they were playing hard, but just didn't have the talent. This year's Cowboy team, is arguably one of the most talented teams in the NFL.
So as a fan, what would I do to fix my beloved Cowboys? Now as a fan, I have some unpopular ideas, but I feel are a must to bring Dallas a Super Bowl.
I'm going to do what needs to be changed, followed by how I'd change it.
Problems:
1. The obvious: Clean house. Fire Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett,Special Teams coach, EVERYBODY! Maybe keep Ray Sherman the WR coach, he seems to do a good job.
2. Here is where I become unpopular because ALOT of people and alot of my friends love the guy, but you have to get rid of Tony Romo. I've blogged about it endlessly how I would've cut him the day after fumbling the hold on the FG against Seattle in the playoffs. Romo is a great stat guy, nice fantasy QB, but he just doesn't have that winner intangible to make the big plays when you need them.
3. 3-4 Defense: we just do not have the personnel to run this defense. We have one pass rusher and in a 3-4 defense, that won't get it done. We have a glorified nickel back playing safety, terrible defense ends, bad tacklers at linebacker. 3-4 only works if you have a monster, versatile front 7. WE DO NOT!
4.Offensive Line: I miss Flozell Adams. I know he jumped offsides 5 times a game, but he could move people around.
How I'd Fix these problems:
1.Throw a blank check at Bill Cowher, if he declines go HARD after Jon Gruden. Gruden does amazing with talent. See Oakland and Tampa Bay. He'd be able to get the most out of the talent in Dallas. Gruden worked well in concert with Al Davis, so Jerry wouldn't bother him. Also, let Gruden hire his own staff. Jerry Jones hiring Jason Garrett BEFORE Phillips and having one guy as the D coach and the other guy as the O coach is just silly.
2. Trade Tony Romo. Arizona, Carolina,Jacksonville,Seattle, maybe even Oakland would line up for a very good QB like Romo. If you could pull a first round pick for Romo, coupled with the high first rd pick we will get for finishing so terrible, major rebuilding could be done right away. My plan would be to sign Michael Vick, all bias and hate aside, imagine Vick running an offense with Miles Austin,Dez Bryant,Jason Witten and Felix Jones? WOW! It would be absolutely electric. With one of the draft choices, draft Ryan Mallett from ARkansas, sit him behind Vick for 2 years and let him learn. You have short term success and a future franchise QB in place.
3.Switch Back to 4-3 Defense. Michael Jenkins and Terrance Newman are good corners, but when your team gets ZERO pass rush, it would make Deion Sanders and Rod Woodson less effective. The 4-3 helps clog up the run lanes, gives you a chance to find some Defensive ends who can rush the passer, and it allows you to take advantage of your strengths and discard the weaknesses we currently have. That or keep the 3-4 but upgrade everyone not named Jay Ratliff,Demarcus Ware and Bradie James. STOP SIGNING big names past their prime a la Zach Thomas,Keith Brookins, their teams before let them go for a reason. WE MUST FIND A SAFETY SOMEWHERE. Darren Woodson was a huge key to our 3 Superbowl titles in the 90's. We must be able to identify a good one and draft that guy or sign a free agent.
4.Offensive Line: Free Agent, draft, We need huge upgrades a long that O line, but then again, I think we have talent, its just effort. Running the ball HELPS offensive linemen. It helps wear down the defensive front 7, which helps pass blocking. When you are one dimensional, the offensive line is behind the 8 ball trying to pass block and blitz pickup every play. So Dallas' big problem has been balance which goes back to the coaching staff.
Most importantly, the draft hasn't been our friend. Outside of Dez Bryant and Demarcus Ware, we have just simply missed on WAY too many draft picks. Trading all those picks for Roy Williams LOL!Marion Barber over Steven Jackson, Bobby Carpenter over Demeco Ryans, Felix Jones over Chris Johnson. Imagine if we had drafted CJ? Second thought, let's don't, so I won't have to feel even worse as a Cowboy fan, as I do right now.
