As a sports' fan, I am never a "Hater" only a truth teller, i leave my bias at the door and post what I see. A lot of fans wear blinders and refuse to see the truth but this is the truth about UK.
1. Lost 6 players:
5 First rd NBA picks: Wall,Cousins,Patterson,Bledsoe,Orton. Dodson transferred
Can't be overlooked the impact losing that much talent has on a team.
2. The Enes Kanter effect. If Kanter is allowed to play, which he should've been, I'm not writing this blog. Kanter is a projected top 5 NBA draft pick and would've been one of the best freshmen in NCAA basketball. Kanter being ineligible cripples our interior game/depth.
3. lack of depth Kentucky play about 7 guys and when Jones gets in foul trouble, we are a very mediocre ball team.
4. Lack of cohesiveness Kentucky are wildly inconsistent. Some games, they show excellent team work and play well, other games, there is way too much one on one and others standing around watching.
5. Coaching: Calipari has done an average job this season. I know Jimbo hates this but the truth is simply the truth, he put all his eggs in Kanter's basket and had NO backup plan thus getting burned in recruiting. Having only 3 recruits getting minutes is just inexcusable. It isn't like Cal got hit upside the head last minute with guys going pro. He had ample time to find replacements and simply didn't. Cal, having no depth, is at the mercy of his players. He can't bench them to teach lessons, cause there is nobody else to put in the games, so the guys just aren't "getting it" they play selfish and not together enough. Cal drives me nuts saying how it isn't "HIS" team but it is the "Players'" team........ uhhhh no it isn't. It is your team, you make them play "YOUR" way.
Calipari is a fantastic recruiter, the best in the business but like Roy Williams at UNC, if he doesn't have superior talent, he doesn't win. Cal isn't a coach that is gonna take a decent player and make him great. If Cal doesn't have top talent, he isn't successful. He isn't a top 5 coach or motivator imo. He isn't terrible but not great. Next year, hopefully some guys stay, and he has a superior class coming in, so hopefully the ship will right itself.
Is Calipari gonna win a title at kentucky? I hope so but with the one and dones and the always possible NCAA sanctions that comes with recruiting/playing these one and dones, I definitely stay concerned and hope we don't end like Umass and Memphis.
